Who we are
The First Children’s Museum in the Rhineland-Palatinate
As the first children’s and youth museum in the Rhineland-Palatinate, the Youth Museum of Speyer began its activities in 1999 as a pilot project. Since then, it has become impossible to imagine the museum landscape without our comprehensive offerings for young people and families. The Youth Museum of Speyer is a place for communication and meaningful leisure time activities for the entire family. In addition, specially designed offerings for school classes at all age levels and for all school types make the Youth Museum an interesting and challenging extracurricular place for learning, where special knowledge and skills can be acquired. We offer daily cultural child and youth development programs orientated toward the interests and requirements of young people.
New Aproach
Our projects and exhibitions are concerned with subjects that directly impact children and youth and also interest them. We pass on knowledge about such subjects as society, art and culture in an easily understood and play-oriented manner. Our focus is on interactive exhibition concepts, which encourage activity-oriented experiences. A child-oriented exhibition architecture and vivid presentations provide an incentive for exploration and discovery. The atmosphere is pressure-free and invites the young person to become active on his own and spontaneously. Activity days and workshops make these personal experiences all the more likely through the artistic and creative handling of the subjects.
The “Voluntary Social Year” in Culture
Since 2006, the Youth Museum of Speyer is available as a site for a young person’s Voluntary Social Year in Culture (VSY Culture). The voluntary social year offers young people the chance to look behind the scenes of museum management and thereby gain valuable experiences. Possibilities include participation in exhibition projects, workshops and events. The VSYer is integrated into the workday and agrees to assume responsibility for certain areas of activity such as, for example, the organization of our workshop rooms. But the focus of the VSY Culture year is the execution of one’s own project in the Youth Museum.
