Tours and Workshops
The Youth Museum of Speyer offers tours and workshops to schools for the current exhibitions and for selected permanent exhibitions of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate’s collections.
The prehistory of the Palatinate
The oldest finds in the “Prehistory of the Palatinate” exhibition are tools and weapons made of flintstone. Two humans from the Stone Age — a Neanderthal and a Cro-Magnon man, along with a modern man — are posed as true-to-life replicas with typical clothing, one beside the other; in the process, they make prehistory come alive for the visitor.
The partial reconstruction of a walk-in linear pottery culture longhouse with numerous replicas inside provides documentation of the most significant change in the early history of mankind: active hunters and gatherers turned into sedentary farmers.
The "Golden Hat of Schifferstadt" and the bronze wheels of Hassloch form the heart of this collection and bear witness to the technical mastery of the Bronze Age. They give us some indication of the mindset of human beings of that period, but leave many questions unanswered as well. With its splendid Celtic grave finds, this collection provides a transition into the Palatinate’s Roman era.

Romans in the Palatinate
The archaeology of the Roman era is fascinating right up to today. More than 400 years of Roman rule in today’s Palatinate have left behind many of the most varied landmarks. These include former Roman fortifications, settlements of craftsmen and the everyday homes of Roman families. The Historical Museum of the Palatinate provides a comprehensive overview of this “Roman Era” in its collection. A large number of original exhibits and stagings like, for example, a Roman villa and a Roman military camp as well as many exhibits that bring what living was like during the Roman era to life for the students.

Cathedral Treasure
The exhibition puts the Cathedral Treasure into its historical context by emphasizing the Cathedral’s volatile history. In its center are the burial crowns of the Salian emperors. Photographs of the grave opening in 1900 and the valuable exhibits taken from the emperors’ graves form the starting point for this glimpse into the past. The precious liturgical utensils like chalices, monstrances and reliquaries as well as the valuable parametria, whose function and liturgical meaning are illustrated in the exhibition, all played an important role in the celebration of the worship service and are preserved as part of the Cathedral Treasure. The significance of the veneration of Saints in the late Middle Ages and the Baroque is exemplified in the numerous sculptures which came from the churches of the diocese of Speyer into the Cathedral Treasure.
