Logo: Pfälzische Gesellschaft

The Society has dedicated itself to scientific research, especially regional studies of the Palatinate. It fulfills the function of an Academy of the Sciences. The scientists that belong to it work in universities and other scientific institutions inside and outside the Palatinate in such fields as agricultural science, archaeology, librarianship, biology, forestry, geography, German studies, history, art history, meteorology, paleontology, jurisprudence, Romance studies, social science, folklife studies, and theology. Through seminars and research projects, the results are shared with the public.

Origins

The Palatine Society for the Advancement of the Sciences has been in existence since 1925. Its founding took place under the Bavarian State Government in 1925, during the time that the Rhineland-Palatinate was part of Bavaria. The goal was the creation of a Scientific Commission for the Bavarian Rhineland-Palatinate. The vinicultural historian, Dr. Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan served as the first President of the Society from 1925 until 1933. The other founding members included Dr. Albert Becker (folklife studies), Prof. Dr. Daniel Häberle (geography), Dr. Carl Pöhlmann (history), Dr. Hermann Pöverlein (biology), Dr. Georg Reismüller (history) und Dr. Friedrich Sprater (archaeology).
