Pirates – Rulers of the Seven Seas

A hands-on swashbuckling exhibition by the Youth Museum of Speyer
Large-scale adventures, rich treasures, and unlimited freedom – this is what children and grown-ups alike associate with the life of famous pirates. Countless myths and stories developed during the era of the famous pirates and today, these belong to the fantasies of every childhood. But what was the life of pirates really like and how could pirate culture even have come into existence in the first place? From December 9, 2006 until April 15, 2007, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer will drop anchor and you are invited to join the crew. 

The hands-on exhibit for young visitors between four and twelve years of age, as  conceived by the Youth Museum of the Palatinate, demonstrates historical information on piracy through numerous interactive stations. Upon entering the hands-on exhibition, the young visitors not only find themselves in fascinating pirate surroundings but they immediately turn into little buccaneers. As young pirates, they can investigate a pirate ship or go on a great search for treasure. In addition to the fascinating biographies of Störtebeker, Blackbeard and the like, children experience what the life of pirates on the high seas was really like.

The various exhibition stations have different themes: everyday shipboard life, the rules on ship, life in port, and the end of piracy. In this manner, the children gain insight into the exciting era of piracy and experience a thrilling buccaneering adventure, right in the middle of a museum.

Companion and action program of the Youth Museum
A comprehensive program structured around the pirate theme is offered as a companion to the exhibition.  With it, children can craft their own treasure chest or make their own pirate flag.
