Literature and Souvenirs
If you are looking for some challenging reading material or just a remembrance of your most recent museum visit, you will find it in the Oelbermann Book Store, part of our museum shop. For our young visitors, we have fascinating children’s books, top-quality toys and naturally, our beloved craft boxes. You will also find our very own exhibition catalogs exclusively on sale there.
Remembrance of Romans and Kings
Our hand-made Roman tableware and handblown glassware make very special souvenirs. Also, carefully reproduced replicas of a bread stamp can be purchased here; the original may be found in the permanent exhibition, the “Roman Period” and stems from the 4th century. The stamp from late antiquity was found in the fortification of Eisenberg and provides evidence of the beginning of Christian belief in this region. Next to the Christian symbol is a circumferential inscription, “ad pane(m) pingere utere felix” (pressing on the bread will probably be necessary).
Another souvenir from the Roman period is the decorative replica of a chicken in clay from the second century AD. Such clay sculptures often served as burial objects and can also serve as a children’s toy, an amulet to ward off evil, or as an accompaniment to a meat dish.
A precious remembrance of a visit to the Cathedral Treasure is provided by a miniature reproduction of the crown of Emperor Henry IV. Made entirely out of silver, it is based on the original with which the king, who became famous for his “pilgrimage to Canossa”, was laid to rest in the Speyer Cathedral.
